Test Methodology

Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA).

IgG antibodies are typically detected two weeks post-infection. Titers greater than or equal to 1:32 are strongly suggestive of active disease; a titer of 1:16 in an acute specimen suggests early infection and should be followed up with a convalescent sample drawn two to three weeks later, if clinically indicated.

Differentiation of Leishmania species is not possible by this technique due to the high inter-species crosspreactivity.

The clinical picture of the patient must be taken into consideration in making the final diagnosis.

Clinical Utility

This assay aids in the diagnosis of leishmaniasis.
