Instructions

  • Fast overnight (12-14 hours).
  • Patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One plain Red-top tube
Also acceptable: One Gold-top SST tube

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within 45 minutes of collection. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 0.5 serum, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.2 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Grossly lipemic specimen.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within 45 minutes of collection. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Transport: 0.5 mL serum, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.2 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 15 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 92 days

This assay is useful in evaluating patients with possible peroxisomal disorders, single-enzyme defects of peroxisomal metabolism such as X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy or peroxisomal biogenesis disorders (Zellweger syndrome spectrum).
