Instructions

  • Random collections normalized to urinary creatinine may be of some clinical use in patients who cannot collect a 24-hour specimen, typically small children. Therefore, this random test is offered for children under 16 years old.
  • Specimen pH should be between 4.5 and 8 and will stay in this range if kept refrigerated. Specimens with pH above 8 may indicate bacterial contamination, and testing will be cancelled. Do not attempt to adjust pH as it will adversely affect results.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: 7.0 mL random urine in a screw-capped container (preferred) or other sterile collection container.  (Minimum: 6.0 mL)

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 7.0 mL random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 6.0 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Specimens collected in metal-capped containers.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).

Transport: 7.0 mL random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 6.0 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 3 days
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 14 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 14 days

Specimen Storage in Department prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory.
