Freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) urine specimens prior to transport.
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport: 4.0 mL urine, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 1.2 mL)

Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Clinical Utility
Elevated urinary methylmalonic acid is an early and sensitive indicator of vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency. Also used to monitor patients with methylmalonic aciduria; diagnosis of methylmalonic aciduria requires an organic acid panel and appropriate clinical history.
