Instructions

  • Patients taking calcineurin inhibitors should stop their medications 72 hours prior to draw.
  • Patients taking Prednisone should stop their medication 2 weeks prior to draw.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One plain Red-top tube.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum to a plastic transfer tube and freeze immediately. (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1 mL serum, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Specimens other than serum.

In-Lab Processing

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 365 days (avoid repeat freeze/thaw cycles)

Clinical Utility

Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria (CIU) is a form of hives that lasts for more than six weeks with no obvious cause. 30-50% of CU is believed to be autoimmune. Two antibodies have been identified. Most commonly, auto-antibodies against high-affinity IgE receptor, FceR1, and also auto-antibodies against IgE are present in patients with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria.
