Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Cervical/Endocervical swab, Vaginal swab, or Urine with an Alinity m multi-collect specimen collection kit.

Alternate collection for urine: Sterile urine cup.

NOTE: Sending urine in a sterile cup is highly discouraged, as specimen stability is only 24 hours, and urine must be transferred to an Alinity multi-collect container within 24 hours.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain Alinity m multi-collect specimen container at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Alinity m multi-collect specimen container at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimen not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Swabbed specimens not collected in an Alinity m multi-collect specimen container.
  • Specimens submitted in UTM or VTM.
  • Throat and rectal swabs.
  • Leaking specimen.
  • Underfilled or overfilled Alinity m multi-collect specimen containers with urine.
  • Urine in sterile cup not received into the lab within 24 hours.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain Alinity m multi-collect specimen container at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F). Transfer urine in urine cup to a Alinity multi-collection tube within 24 hours of collection. Urine in sterile cups received into the lab beyond 24 hours will be rejected.

Storage

Alinity m multi-collect specimen containers (Urine and Swabs):

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 14 days
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 14 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 60 days

Unpreserved/Neat Urine samples:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 24 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 24 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

Clinical Utility

For testing of Trichomonas vaginalis in all individuals under the age of 14 years and for testing in cases of suspected abuse for individuals under the age of 18 years.

Not for routine testing in patients aged 14 to 17 years old.
