Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F) the centrifuged collection tube within eight hours of collection. (Minimum Serum: 0.5 mL)

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Centrifuged collection tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum Serum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Lipemic or icteric specimens.
  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens.

In-Lab Processing

Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Room temperature is acceptable for a maximum of eight hours. (Minimum Serum: 0.5 mL)

Laboratory

Royal Oak Special Chemistry Laboratory

Performed

Monday – Friday.
Results available within 2 business days.

Reference Range

Less than or equal to 35 IU/mL.

Test Methodology

Chemiluminescence Immunoassay.

Interpretation

TPO autoantibody concentrations correlate with the degree of lymphoid infiltration of the thyroid gland. Low concentrations of TPO autoantibody predict at-risk pregnancy. TPO autoantibodies are also detected in some patients with other autoimmune disease who have normal thyroid function.

Clinical Utility

Autoantibodies to thyroid peroxidase (TPO), which is the major antigen of thyroid microsomes, can be detected in the serum of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (e.g., Hashimoto, Graves).
