Clinical Utility

Streptomycin is a systemic aminoglycoside. It is used primarily as an antitubercular and is active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. bovis. It is also considered the drug of choice for the treatment of infections caused by Francisella tularensis and Yersinia pestis, and is often used to treat Brucella infections. Because many other gram-negative bacilli are resistant, streptomycin is rarely used to treat those organisms.
