Rejection Criteria
- Hemolyzed specimens.
- Lipemic specimens.
- Severely icteric specimens.
- Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
In-Lab Processing
Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F).
Transport: 2.0 mL serum, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 1.0 mL)

Laboratory
Sent to ARUP Laboratories, Salt Lake City, UT.
Performed
Thursday.
Results available in 2-10 days.
Reference Range
By report.
Test Methodology
Semi-Quantitative Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)/Semi-Quantitative Indirect Fluorescent Antibody/Qualitative Immunoblot.
Interpretation
Low concentrations of one or more antibodies in this evaluation can be associated with neuropathies secondary to infectious, inflammatory or systemic autoimmune diseases. However, high concentrations of one or more antibodies, especially with paraproteinemia (as indicated by immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE), are suggestive of a primary immune-mediated peripheral neuropathy.
Clinical Utility
This assay aids in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients with motor, sensory or sensorimotor neuropathy associated with aberrant autoantibody responses to antigens in the nervous system. This assay may also be used to evaluate patients with silicone gel implants with neurologic involvement/ neuropathy.
