Laboratory
Sent to Monogram Biosciences, San Francisco, CA.
Performed
Monday – Saturday.
Results available within one month.
Reference Range
By report.
Test Methodology
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Amplification and Viral Culture.
Interpretation
- Phenotyping is the actual measurement of viral resistance found by growing the virus derived from each patient in the presence of antiviral drugs.
- Limitations: This procedure may not be successful when the viral load is less than 500 copies per milliliter of plasma. If there is insufficient virus to produce results, HIV-1 RNA quantitation will be performed to confirm viral load.
Clinical Utility
This assay detects resistance in HIV-1 to antiretroviral drugs.
