Instructions
HIV 1/2 RAPID OB tests can only be ordered for pregnant women in Labor and Delivery at a Beaumont Hospital Campus with an unknown/undocumented HIV status.
Specimen Collection Criteria
Collect: One EDTA whole blood tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 5.0 mL)
Send specimen STAT to the STAT Laboratory (Royal Oak) or Chemistry Laboratory (Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe and Troy) immediately after collection.
Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation
Maintain whole blood refrigerated (2–8°C or 36–46°F), or at room temperature (20–26°C or 68–78.8°F) prior to transport. For delays in transport greater than 24 hours, centrifuge the specimen, transfer plasma to
a plastic transport tube, and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 1.0 mL plasma)
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport: Whole blood, refrigerated (2–8°C or 36–46°F), or plasma, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 3.0 mL whole blood or 1.0 mL plasma)
Rejection Criteria
- Heat inactivated serum.
- Severely lipemic or hemolyzed specimens.
- Specimens that have obvious bacterial contamination.
In-Lab Processing
Deliver immediately to the appropriate testing station.

Interpretation
This is a RAPID screening test for HIV 1/2 antibodies and HIV-1 p24 Antigen. All positive test results will be reported as Preliminary Positive. A preliminary positive will be confirmed by the current 4th generation assay and when necessary additional confirmation procedures. In accordance with recent CDC guidelines, Western Blot will NOT be performed.
Clinical Utility
This RAPID HIV 1/2 test is used to assay serum from pregnant women who have unknown or undocumented HIV status. Test results should be made available to ordering physicians within 2 hours.
