Interpretation
This test uses a kit designated by the manufacturer as "for research use, not for clinical use." The performance characteristics of this test were validated by ARUP Laboratories, Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved this test. The results are not intended to be used as the sole means for clinical diagnosis or patient management decisions. ARUP is authorized under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and by all states to perform high-complexity testing.
Elevated antibody levels to Ganglioside-monosialic acid (GM1), a glycolipid, have been shown in some instances to be associated with certain neurological disorders such as; Lower Motor Neuron Syndrome, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, other multifocal neuropathies, and SLE with central nervous system involvement. Some normal individuals have low levels of GM1 Antibodies. The cause of such disorders is not fully understood and the significance of elevated antibody levels has not been adequately established. The test has been designed to be an aid in the monitoring of changes in antibody levels before, during and after treatment and may be helpful to the clinician in conjunction with other tests and clinical symptoms for the evaluation and treatment of these patients.
Clinical Utility
The GM1 antibody panel aids in the monitoring of changes in antibody levels before, during and after treatment and may be helpful to the clinician in conjunction with other tests and clinical symptoms for the evaluation and treatment of these patients. Assaying both the GM1 antibodies and the epitope Asialo antibodies helps in differentiating the various neurological/neuromuscular diseases associated with these antibodies.
