Instructions

  • This test is performed on pregnant patients only.
  • A fasting specimen is not included.
  • No special patient preparation is necessary prior to administration of the glucola.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One Gray-top Potassium Oxalate / Sodium Fluoride tube, 1 hour after the administration of Glucola.

Also acceptable: One Gold-top SST tube, 1 hour after the administration of Glucola.

Contact Laboratory for acceptability of other tube types. Record the exact time of draw on the tube.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain Gray-top tubes refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to courier transport. (Mininmum: 0.5 mL)

Let SST specimens clot 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F) the centrifuged SST tube within two hours of collection. (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Centrifuged SST tube or Gray-top tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens collected in any tube other than an SST or Gray-top tube.
  • SST samples in which the serum has not been separated from the cells within 1 hour of collection.
  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Gray-top tubes that are not received within 24 hours of collection.
  • Inadequately centrifuged Microtainers® or Gold-top tubes.

In-Lab Processing

Let SST specimens clot 30-60 minutes. Centrifuge SST, Gray-top tubes, or Microtainers® to separate serum or plasma from cells. Deliver immediately to the appropriate testing station.

Performed

Sunday – Saturday, 24 hours a day.
Results available within 24 hours.

Reference Range

60-139 mg/dL.

Test Methodology

Enzymatic.

Interpretation

A result equal to or greater than 140 mg/dL is considered abnormal and should be further evaluated by the Glucose Tolerance 2-Hour, Pregnancy (75g Glucola) test or the Glucose Tolerance 3-Hour, Pregnancy (100g Glucola) test.

Clinical Utility

Screening is recommended at 28 weeks (24 to 30 weeks) gestation unless history or symptoms indicate its desirability at an earlier time or the woman is considered to be at low risk for development of gestational diabetes [less than 25 years, normal body weight, no family history (first degree relative), not from an ethnic/racial group with a high prevalence of diabetes (e.g. Hispanic, Native American, Asian, African-American), and no history of poor obstetric outcome - all criteria must be met].
