Instructions

Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician).

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Royal Blue-top tube with no additive.

Do not use Serum Separator Tubes. 

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Allow sample to clot for 30 minutes. Centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube within 2 hours of collection. Carefully pour serum into aliquot tube. Do not use a pipette or wooden sticks to assist transfer. Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport. Do not ream with wooden stick.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1.0 mL serum, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Serum Separator (SST) tubes.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated. 

In-Lab Processing

Transport: 1.0 mL serum, at refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.5 mL) 

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 14 days

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
