Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One plain Red-top tube.
Also acceptable: One Lavender-top EDTA tube.

Do not use Serum Separator Tubes.
Time of Collection:
 Trough, just prior to next dose.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 2.0 mL serum or plasma, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Serum Separator (SST) Tube.
  • Whole blood
  • Hemolyzed specimens
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Clinical Utility

Chlorpromazine is used to treat psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia), control nausea and vomiting, relieve restlessness prior to surgery, treat acute intermittent porphyria, control the manic phase in bipolar disorders, to treat intractable hiccups, and treat problems in children characterized by hyper-excitable, aggressive stages. This assay is used for the therapeutic monitoring and toxicity assessment of Chlorpromazine.
