Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One plain Red-top tube.

Note: Specimen must be protected from light.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum to a LIGHT PROTECTED plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 0.5 mL serum, refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.3 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not protected from light.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum to a LIGHT PROTECTED plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°).

Transport: 0.5 mL serum or plasma, refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 0.3 mL)

Clinical Utility

Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety, withdrawal symptoms of acute alcoholism, and preoperative apprehension and anxiety. This assay is used to monitor the therapeutic drug level and to evaluate the toxicity of chlordiazepoxide. Nordiazepam is an active metabolite and is also monitored.
