Lab Test

Lyme IgG and IgM

Lyme Antibody (IgG/IgM), Lyme Ab, Lyme Antibody, IgG/IgM, Lyme Antibody, IgG and IgM , EPIC: LAB6896, SOFT: LYME

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 6.0 mL)

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F) the centrifuged collection tube within two hours of collection. (Minimum Serum: 1.5 mL)

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Centrifuged collection tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum Serum: 1.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Plasma specimens.
  • Severely lipemic, icteric, or hemolyzed specimens.

Storage

Centrifuged SST tubes may be transported and stored at ambient temperatures (2o to 30oC; 36 to 86oF) for up to 48 hours. DO NOT FREEZE TUBES CONTAINING BLOOD. For longer storage, the serum should be removed from the gel and refrigerated (2o-8oC) or frozen at -20oC or below.

Red-top tubes and Microtainers® may be stored at ambient temperatures for up to 16 hours and for up to 3 days at refrigerator temperatures (2o-8oC). DO NOT FREEZE TUBES CONTAINING BLOOD. For longer storage, the serum should be removed from the clot and refrigerated (2o-8oC) or frozen at -20oC or below.

Serum specimens (pour-overs) may be stored at room temperature (20o to 26oC; 68 to 79oF) for up to 1 week, refrigerator temperature (2 to 8oC; 36 to 47oF) for two weeks, and at -20oC (-4oF) for up to 3 months. Specimens stored at -70oC (- 94oF) can be stored indefinitely.

Performed

Tuesday, Friday.
Results available within 3 business days.

Reference Range

Units: Index Value (IV).
Negative: Less than or equal to 0.89.
Equivocal: 0.90-1.09.
Positive: Greater than or equal to 1.10.

Test Methodology

Chemiluminescent Immunoassay. Measures IgG and IgM antibodies to VIsE (variable major protein-like sequence, expressed) protein antigen of Borrelia burgdorferi in human serum.

Interpretation

A negative test result indicates that both IgG and IgM are negative. A positive test result indicates that IgG, IgM, or both are positive. All positive and equivocal results are sent out for Lyme Immunoblot testing. Prompt antibiotic treatment can interfere with specific antibody responses.

Clinical Utility

This assay aids in the diagnosis of infection with B. burgdorferi.
