Laboratory

Sent to ARUP Laboratories, Salt Lake City, UT.

Performed

Sunday - Saturday.
Results available in 2-4 days.

Reference Range

Therapeutic Range: 1.5-4.5 mcg/mL.
Critical Range: Greater than 10 mcg/mL.

Test Methodology

Immunoassay.

Interpretation

Quinidine is eliminated by both renal and metabolic processes, therefore kidney or liver disease or advanced age could impair clearance and increase serum or plasma concentrations.

Clinical Utility

Quinidine is a naturally accurring alkaloid which is used to treat both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias cardiac arrhythmias. Quinidine has a narrow therapeutic index and the therapeutic and toxic effects have been shown to be related to quinidine serum concentrations. To obtain optimum therapy, monitoring of serum levels of quinidine in patients receiving the drug is recommended.
