Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube AND one Green-top Sodium Heparin tube.

Both SST and Sodium Heparin tubes are needed. 

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Do not refrigerate or freeze specimen. Maintain specimens at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F) prior to transport. Transport to the Laboratory within 24 hours of collection.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: SST and Sodium Heparin tubes, at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F).

Rejection Criteria

  • Unlabeled specimens.
  • Specimens drawn in EDTA tubes.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 24 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): Unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
