Instructions

  • Due to specimen stability, patients should be drawn Monday-Thursday only. For questions, call the Laboratory at 800-551-0488.
  • A control specimen from an unrelated, non-smoking individual must be collected and sent with the patient specimen.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Lavender-top EDTA tube from the patient AND one Lavender-top EDTA tube from an unrelated individual as a control specimen. Indicate the control's sex on the control collection tube.

Send specimens for processing immediately after collection.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Do not centrifuge. Maintain whole blood specimens refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 4.0 mL whole blood for both patient and control specimens, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.0 mL each tube)

Rejection Criteria

  • Centrifuged specimens.
  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Transport: 4.0 mL whole blood for both patient and control specimens, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.0 mL each tube)

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 72 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
