Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Centrifuged SST tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Min: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Red-top tubes with serum not separated from cells within two hours of collection.

Reference Range

Grosse Pointe: 73-393 U/L.
Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and Troy: 7-60 U/L.

Test Methodology

Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and Troy: Enzymatic.
Grosse Ponte: Colorimetric

Interpretation

Increased lipase levels are seen in acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cyst or pseudocyst. Levels may also be elevated with gallstones, peritonitis and strangulated or infarcted bowel. Lipase levels become elevated at about the same time as amylase in pancreatitis but lipase levels remain elevated much longer than amylase (7-10 days). In parotitis, serum lipase levels are normal.

Clinical Utility

This assay aids in the diagnosis of patients suspected of having acute pancreatitis.
