Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Random urine in a screw-capped container (preferred) or other sterile collection container. (Min: 2.5 mL)

Note: This test is only offered on patients 16 years of age or younger, 24 hour collection is the preferred sample.

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Random urine, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Min: 2.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.


Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 14 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 1 month

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Sendout Laboratory with any questions.

Test Methodology

Quantitative High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) - Tandem Mass Spectrometry.


Increased metanephrine levels are found in patients with tumors of the adrenal medulla (e.g., pheochromocytoma) or other tumors derived from neural crest cells (e.g., paragangliomas and neuroblastoma).

Alpha-methyldopa (alpha-Aldomet), an anti-hypertensive drug, interferes with this assay.
