Diagnostic samples and/or infectious substances must be packaged in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and FedEx guidelines. Federal regulations require that specimens be properly prepared and packaged by the shipper and air carriers when packaging and transporting patient clinical specimens by air.
Ship the appropriate specimen at ambient temperatures (20-25°C or 68-77°F). In extreme weather conditions, a non-refrigerated cold pack can be used to maintain temperature stability.
Ship the appropriate specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) in an insulated container. Ensure that the specimen does not come in direct contact with the cold pack to avoid freezing and/or hemolysis.
Ship the appropriate specimen frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) in an insulated container. Ship the sample using 3-5 pounds of dry ice. CAUTION: Dry ice is considered a hazardous substance and must be packaged in compliance with DOT, IATA, and FedEx requirements.
Please visit the IATA website for additional documentation regarding the latest IATA shipping regulations.
