Specimen Collection Criteria
NP swab in viral transport medium (i.e. M4-RT, M5, Universal Transport Media) refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F).
During collection, please remember to leave the NP swab in the patient's nasopharynx for 30 seconds and to gently rotate the swab to obtain an adequate specimen.
* Testing nasopharyngeal aspirates/washes and bronchoalveolar lavage/wash specimens must be approved by the Medical Director; otherwise these samples should be tested by viral culture (refer to comprehensive viral culture).
Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation
Store refrigerated or on wet ice (2-8°C or 36-46°F).
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport specimens refrigerated or on wet ice (2-8°C or 36-46°F).
Samples collected in bacterial transport system, dry swabs, plasma or serum cannot be tested.
Sunday - Saturday, batched
Results available usually within 24 hours.
Negative (No influenza A viruses detected)
Real-time, Reverse-Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)
Detects all types of influenza A viruses and specifically detects the H1N1 (2009) influenza A virus, formerly "Swine Flu".
This test may be used to differentiate seasonal influenza A from the nH1N1 (2009) influenza A virus. For additional information please contact the Customer Service via 1-800-551-0488, option 5.
