Test Codes



This test is only available to Inpatients at the Royal Oak hospital.

  • Hyponatremia Panel should ONLY be collected at the Royal Oak Hospital Campus. Specimens should not be collected at any other Beaumont campus, laboratory drawsite, nursing home, or Outreach office.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Dark Green-top Lithium Heparin tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 1.0 mL)

Transport specimen to the STAT Laboratory immediately after collection.

Do NOT use Light Green Plasma Separator (PST) tubes.

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens not received within 1 hour of collection.
  • Moderate to grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Specimens in which significant delays occur before arrival in the laboratory (greater than 2 hours). 

In-Lab Processing

Immediately analyze the whole blood specimen upon receipt in the Laboratory.


Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 2 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): Unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days


Royal Oak STAT Laboratory


Sunday – Saturday, 24 hours a day.
STAT results available within 30 minutes of receipt in the STAT Laboratory.

Test Methodology

Direct Potentiometry on Blood Gas Analyzer.

This panel includes: ChloridePotassium, and Sodium.

Clinical Utility

To monitor hyponatremic patients. It may also be useful in cases of suspected pseudohyponatremia or pseudohyperkalemia. See individual ChloridePotassium, and Sodium assays for clincial utility.
