Instructions

Specimens must be collected in a pre-chilled EDTA tube.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One pre-chilled Lavender-top EDTA tube. (Min: 3.0 mL)

  • Critical frozen. Place specimen on wet ice immediately after collection and send to the Laboratory for processing.
  • Separate samples must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Critical frozen. Centrifuge to separate plasma from cells within 20 minutes of collection. Transfer plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) immediately.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1.0 mL plasma, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Min: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens that are not frozen.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 1 hour
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 6 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 6 months

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Sendout Laboratory with any questions.

Clinical Utility

Histamine is one of the major mediators of allergic reactions. Histamine levels may be increased in some carcinoid tumors (particularly of gastric origin), urticaria pigmentosa, and with symptoms of flushing, itching, uticaria, vomiting, syncope, or shock. Increased histamine levels are also associated with allergies, systemic mastocytosis or basophilia.
