Triglycerides

Antrim #17098, EPIC: LAB5117, SOFT: TRIG

Instructions

It is recommended that the patient fast for 9 - 12 hours prior to blood draw.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube. (Minimum Whole Blood 4.0 mL)

Contact the Laboratory for the acceptability of other tube types.
See Minimum Pediatric Specimen Requirements for Microtainer® collection.

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Let SST specimens clot for 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F) the centrifuged SST tube within two hours of collection. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Centrifuged SST tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Min: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Moderate to grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Red-top tubes with serum not separated from cells within two hours of collection.

Reference Range

Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak & Farmington Hills:

Age  Range
0 - 19 Years 30 - 120 mg/dL.
20 Years or Older 30 - 149 mg/dL.

Borderline high: 150 - 199 mg/dL.
High: 200 - 499 mg/dL.
Very high: Greater than or equal to 500 mg/dL.

Farmington Hills:

0-19 Years Old: Less than or equal to 120 mg/dL.
Greater than 19 Years Old: Less than or equal to 149 mg/dL.

Test Methodology

Enzymatic, Spectrophotometry.

Interpretation

Triglycerides in blood are present in chylomicrons and very low density lipoprotein particles. Chylomicrons should not be seen in normal fasting serum/plasma. A triglyceride level > 1000 mg/dL may lead to pancreatitis.

Glycerol results in positive assay interference.

Clinical Utility

Triglyceride measurements aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with primary and secondary lipid disorders (e.g., diabetes mellitus, renal disease, liver obstruction, hypothyroidism).
