Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Infants first stool (meconium).

Note: For maximum sensitivity, collect all meconium from first passage until transitional milk stool. For average sensitivity, collect four (4.0) grams. The labaratory will analyze amounts under four grams, but that sensitivity will be lost.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 4.0 g meconium, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Min: 2.0 g)

Rejection Criteria

  • Yellow stool specimens may be rejected.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 7 days
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 3 months
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 1 year

Laboratory

Sent to ARUP Laboratories, Salt Lake City, UT.

Performed

Sunday - Saturday.
Results available in 2-5 days.

Reference Range

By report.

Test Methodology

Qualitative Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)/Quantitative Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)/Quantitative Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Interpretation

Since meconium begins to form in the fetal gut about the fourth month, this procedure can provide up to a 20 week history of fetal drug exposure.

Reflex Testing

If the specimen screens positive, then confirmation/quantitation by GC/MS and/or LC-MS/MS will be performed.

Clinical Utility

Specimens are screened for the presence of Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Buprenorphine, Cocaine, Marijuana, Methadone, Opiates, and Phencyclidine.
