Instructions

  • Patient should be fasting for 12 hours prior to specimen collection.
  • Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen collection.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One plain Red-top or Gold-top SST tube. 
Also acceptable: One Lavender-top EDTA tube.

Protect specimen from light.

Physician Office/Drawsite Specimen Preparation

Protect specimen from light. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within one hour of collection. Transfer serum or plasma to an amber transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F) immediately.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1.0 mL serum or plasma, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Min: 0.6 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 30 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 6 months

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Sendout Laboratory with any questions.

Quantitative High Performance Liquid Chromatography.

Interpretation

Vitamin K concentration is reported as nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). To convert concentration to nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), multiply the result by 0.45.

Clinical Utility

This assay provides specific quantitation of Vitamin K1 levels.
