Pathology Fellowships
Beaumont Health System’s Department of Pathology offers fellowships in highly specialized areas to postdoctoral candidates. These structured programs provide extensive, specialized experiences to further prepare individuals for a successful career in pathology and laboratory medicine. Beaumont’s four pathology fellowships are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Blood Bank | Transfusion
In our 12-month blood banking/transfusion medicine fellowship, physicians gain skills necessary to become a transfusion medicine specialist. Fellows gain hands-on transfusion and transplant experience at William Beaumont Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center; blood donor center experience at the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Regional Blood Services Center; and training for transfusion medicine support of stem cell transplantation programs through the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Karmanos Cancer Center. Fellows will gain critical experience that prepares them for the American Board of Pathology Sub-specialty Certification Examination in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
Chemical Pathology
The Department of Clinical Pathology offers a one-year fellowship training program in chemical pathology. Extensive training is provided in automated chemistry and special testing, with additional training in molecular pathology. Fellows will
gain experience in test interpretations, review of triple/quad screens, drug testing and hydrogen breath testing. Fellows also will assist with review of the appropriateness of send-out test orders.
Cytopathology
Our cytopathology fellowship offers tremendous hands-on experience with a variety of cytologic cases representing all of the major organ systems and specimen types typically encountered in the practice of cytopathology. Beaumont’s cytopathology laboratory processes nearly 75,000 gynecologic, non-gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration specimens each year, allowing fellows to actively participate in cytopathology laboratory management, administration and quality assurance activities. Fellows are responsible for signing out specimens, participating in weekly fine needle aspiration clinics, examining sentinel lymph nodes, preparing and interpreting sentinel lymph node scrapings, presenting at numerous inter-departmental conferences, performing frozen sections and teaching pathology residents.
Hematopathology
Beaumont’s Department of Clinical Pathology offers a one-year fellowship in hematopathology, which emphasizes the morphologic diagnosis of benign and malignant hematologic conditions involving blood, bone marrow, tissue and body fluids
as well as laboratory and management aspects of hematology and coagulation. Rotations include: bone marrow morphology, flow cytometry, lymph node morphology, coagulation, cytogenetics, molecular pathology and chemistry. Fellows gain critical
experience in laboratory management and quality control; laboratory assessment of red cell, white cell, and platelet disorders; a consultative approach to coagulation disorders; detailed analysis and interpretation of the morphologic aspects
of the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissues; appropriate use of immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics/FISH and molecular diagnostics in the diagnosis of hematologic disorders.
