Please contact the Farmington Hills Anatomic Pathology Laboratory if assistance with ordering is needed.

Instructions

  • Testing is performed Monday – Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm. If a known frozen section is needed between the hours of  4:00 pmand 7:30 am, Monday – Friday, on the weekend, or on a holiday, contact the on-call pathologist directly before the case is started.

If needed, the pathologist can also be contacted by pager or home phone. This contact information can be found on the Pathologist Schedule found in Surgery, the Laboratory, and on the Beaumont Health Smartweb paging site. If attempts to reach the on-call pathologist are unsuccessful then any pathologists may be contacted via home phone or pager. Laboratory Central Processing 947-521-2580 can also help locate a pathologist.

  • Please provide a completed Pathology Requisition Form (including clinical and surgical history, ICD-10 code, and pre-op diagnosis) and a completed Consultation Form.  Also include any pathology reports for other institutions (if available) and x-rays (if performed).
  • A phone/pager number to contact with results must be provided.
  • For specimen NOT collected on Beaumont Farmington Hills campus, transportation to the laboratory must be arranged prior to specimen collection.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Tissue for Frozen Section Study, submitted fresh without fixative.  Include all necessary forms and documentation as described in Instructions above.

Deliver specimen STAT to the Anatomic Pathology Department.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen fresh (without fixative).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Pre-arrange transport.

Fresh (without fixative) tissue for frozen section study.

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens in fixative (if fixative is used, the specimen will be processed for routine pathology only).
  • Specimens submitted without proper paperwork, as described in Instructions above.

In-Lab Processing

Maintain fresh (without fixative) tissue specimen until processed.

Storage

Specimens are processed immediately upon receipt in the Laboratory.   

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:
Any unprocessed surgical specimen is placed in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin and disposed after 4 weeks from receiving date.

Results available 20 minutes from receipt in the laboratory.

Interpretation

Diagnosis performed by a board certified pathologist.
