Histotechnology Program
Located at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, the School of Histotechnician was established in 1994 and has graduated 28 students. The School of Histotechnologist was established in 1977 and has graduated more than 121 students. Students from across the country apply for the School of Histotechnologist, which is one of only two schools of its kind in the nation.
The staff at each school consists of board-certified pathologists, Ph.D.s, histotechnicians, histotechnologists, cytotechnologists, cytogenetic technologists, pathology assistants and laboratory assistants. Both schools are part of the Department of Anatomic Pathology and are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
A histologic technician (or histotechnician, HT) and a histotechnologist (HTL) each combine technical skills with scientific knowledge to perform various tissue-related procedures in an anatomic pathology laboratory.
What is the difference?
At Beaumont, students of both of these closely related disciplines prepare and stain tissues for histology labs for diagnosis by a pathologist to identify bacteria, fungi, cancer and tissue structure abnormalities. Histotechnologists also
prep and test tissue by means of immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, muscle enzymes or electron microscopy, thereby involving additional training and prerequisites beyond that of a histologic technician.
What qualifies me as a histologic technician or histotechnologist?
You must be keenly interested in science and math, have patience, precision, fine manual dexterity and the ability to work with minimal supervision. As Beaumont Schools of Histotechnology accepts only two histologic Technician and 4 histotechnologist students per year, you also must meet specific academic prerequisites and complete the coursework outlined below.

How do the curricula for Beaumont histologic technicians and Beaumont histotechnologists compare?
The programs, which require 40 hours a week in the Anatomic Pathology department at the Beaumont Hospital campus in Royal Oak, Michigan, consist of the following:
- Histologic Technician (HT)
- Histotechnologist (HTL)
- 28-week program (September through March)
- Lectures (histotechnique, tissue identification, electron microscopy and immunology)
- Lab assignments (histology tissue preparation, 50 histochemical staining reactions)
- Clinical rotations (surgical pathology, histology laboratories)
Upon program completion, graduates are eligible to take the national certification exams for either histotechnican (HT) or histotechnologists (HTL), both administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification.
How do I apply to the Beaumont Schools of Histotechnology?
To prepare for a career as a histotechnician, you should have an associate’s degree (or 60 college credit hours) and a solid foundation in the sciences of biology and chemistry, math and computer science. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a science/math GPA of 3.0. Required courses must have been taken within the last seven years.
To prepare for a career in histotechnology, prospective students should develop a strong background in sciences including biology and chemistry, as well as mathematics. A baccalaureate degree and clinical education in an accredited histotechnologist program or a bachelor’s degree paired with on-the-job-training is required to become a histotechnologist. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and a science/math GPA of 3.0. Required courses must have been taken within the last seven years.
Application documentation, including official transcripts, letters of recommendation and academic course plans are due April 15 each year, followed by on-site interviews and other requirements. Pending admission, which is highly competitive, the program officially starts at the end of August of the same year.
